We talked to Dermalogica’s head of education, Caroline Parker, to see how you can make your next facial go the distance.

When was the last time you indulged yourself? Whether it’s with a massage, facial or just getting your nails done, a quick pick-me-up is sometimes all you need. But why spend the money then get home and undo all the great work of the professionals?
If do have monthly facials built-in to your expenses, then lucky you! They’re definitely a luxury, but are important for maintaining healthy looking skin. If you’ve never had one before… book in now! Seriously, you don’t know what you’re missing.
The instant feeling of a rejuvenated and glowing complexion is addictive, so here’s a bunch of ways to make sure that feeling lasts…

KEEP MAKE-UP TO A MINIMUM
‘Our skin is particularly receptive to products after a skin treatment meaning that it will absorb ingredients more deeply and effectively,’ says Caroline. ‘With that in mind, we want to only be putting ingredients on our skin that have great skin health benefits – make-up is usually more cosmetic and not so focused on skin health ingredients.’
Directly after a facial, try not to apply make-up for the first 24 hours, then ease into it with a light veil of mineral make-up so it doesn’t clog your pores. Make-up with infused skincare benefits work wonders too, so you don’t need to double up on products you’re applying. TRY: Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation, $105, Dermalogica Skin Perfect Primer, $94, MAC Mineralize Foundation Loose, $70.

FEED YOUR SKIN
‘It’s definitely good to focus on hydration after a treatment, so serums or masques containing hyaluronic acid are great to keep your skin looking dewy and soft,’ says Caroline. ‘Our skin absorbs ingredients more effectively after a facial it’s so it’s great time to use products vitamins A, C, B5 and E – all great at firming and smoothing.’
FEED SKIN TRY: Antipodes Worship Superfruit Antioxidant Serum, $54.50, Dermalogica MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque, $91.

STAY HYDRATED
We’re not just talking about lots of water intake (although that’s highly recommended), we’re meaning moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Usually with a facial your skin goes through it’s fair share of exfoliation, so the lipid barrier will naturally be reduced. Make sure you use extra hydrating products that will hold moisture in the skin all day.
TRY: Za Deep Hydration Lasting Moisture Gel, $28, Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster, $106, Lancome Renergie Multi-Lift Crème Legere, $179.

FACIAL MASSAGING WORKS!
Have you ever wondered why your esthetician take their time applying the products to your face working them in to your skin meticulously? Well, it’s because facial massaging increases lymphatic drainage and blood circulation which helps skin look plumper and brighter by bringing nutrients and oxygen to the surface. If you’re not sure of the correct technique, try patting your products on then moving in light circular motions in upwards strokes towards your hairline.

EASE OFF THE EXFOLIATION
Be nice to your skin after a facial. ‘Your therapist should advise you on how long to wait before exfoliating at home after a treatment as it will depend on the strength of the exfoliant they used,’ says Caroline. Over-exfoliation can lead to irritation, dryness, and breakouts. ‘Sometimes it can be as much as a week before you’re advised to exfoliate at home.’
TRY: Moisture Mist Gentle Cleansing Foam, $26, Garnier Pure 3 in 1 Cleansing Mask, $12.99.

STEP UP YOUR SPF
Your skin is more photosensitive after a facial. Skimping on the SPF could undo all of the hard work your esthetician just put in.
‘It’s definitely important to wear an SPF after a skin treatment and especially after a chemical peel,’ says Caroline. ‘During exfoliation our skin loses some surface cells which contain pigment that helps protect our skin from UV rays.’
We recommend physical sunscreens as they’re less irritating than chemical ones, so look for SPF ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
TRY: Dermalogica UltraCalming Super Sensitive Shield SPF30, $82, Clarins Sunscreen Care Cream SPF 30, $53, Olay Regenerist Superstructure Cream SPF 30, $49.99.

What it is: A super-saturated hydrating fluid that leaves the skin soft and supple
Who: Anyone with dehydrated skin – which is pretty much all of us, especially when the weather is cold and dry.
Benefits: This serum is oil free and quick and easy to use. You will notice a reduction in fine lines and no more tight flaky skin. It can also be used around the eye area under an eye cream to combat the fine lines of dehydration.
How to use: Squeeze 6 – 10 drops onto your fingertips and massage gently over face and throat. Ideally apply this serum directly onto the skin after cleansing and toning, and follow with your moisturizer.  If time is of the essence, however, then it can be mixed in with your moisturiser.
Why we love it: It absorbs super-fast and leaves no greasy residue on your skin. It’s the perfect winter serum which allows us to still spend time outside without our skin suffering the consequences.
