SKIN: GET SUN SMART

It’s not too late! Boost your skin’s health and protect your complexion by staying out of the sun.

BEWARE OF THE RAYS
There are two types of radiation emitted by the sun, and both can be harmful to our skin. ‘UVA rays are known as “the ageing rays” as they are able to penetrate deeply into the skin,’ says Dermalogica’s Head of Education, Caroline Parker. These rays damage the protein structures that give our skin strength and support.
‘UVB rays are known as ” the burning rays” as overexposure causes sunburnt skin,’ she says. Exposure to UVB rays stimulates the production of melanin, the brown pigment that we know as a tan. A tan is the skin’s way of protecting itself from UVB rays. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen will protect your skin against both types of rays.

SLATHER UP!
We all know how important sunscreens are, but did you know there are two types to protect our skin? Physical sunscreens such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide both reflect or scatter UV rays away from the skin, and are generally non-irritating so are ideal for sensitive skin.
Chemical sunscreens absorb the UV and release the energy as heat, and have ingredients such as avobenzone, oxybenzone and octocrylene. Most products now contain both physical and chemical blockers, but it always pays to check.
‘The SPF (sun protectant factor) represents the products ability to shield against UVB rays,’ says Caroline. Put simply, the higher the SPF, the longer a product will be able to prevent your skin from burning.

DON’T EXPOSE YOURSELF
Protecting our skin from the sun’s rays is the best way to avoid premature ageing. Overexposure to UVA rays causes a reduction in skin firmness, which can lead to deep lines and wrinkles later on,’ says Caroline.
‘Damage to pigment-producing cells accumulates with repeated exposure to UV rays, resulting in a mottled and uneven skin tone.’ Sunburn can also lead to broken capillaries, skin lesions and even deadly melanoma, so always remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap!

TOP TIP: REAPPLY OFTEN! Sunscreens do wear off. You should reapply every two hours, but if you are swimming or your skin is sweating, then reapply more often.
